Welcome to First Baptist Church!
First Baptist Church seeks to be a community of faith which helps one another to love, live, grow, and go like Jesus.
Regardless of who you are, where you've been, or what you value, our aim is to receive you as Christ. Our vision, mission, and values are demonstrated each Sunday in worship, and most visibly on the first Sunday of each month as we gather around the Lord's Table to share in Communion.
Speaking of the Table, there's room for you! Please join us this Sunday for worship at 8:45 or 10:55. We look forward to meeting you and hope for the opportunity to learn more about your journey.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I wear on Sunday?
We invite you to wear whatever makes you most comfortable. There is no dress code. There is the tendency for participants at the 8:30 service to dress more casually, as does worship leadership. At 10:55, the worship leadership wear robes and the congregation typically dresses more formally. Again, this is more guide than code.
How would you describe worship?
The 8:45 service is relaxed including elements of quiet reflection and voluntary dialogue. Secular elements (i.e. songs, videos) not common to church worship are sometimes included in this more brief (30 minutes) worship time. The 10:55 worship service is more formal, traditional, liturgical, and lasts one hour. The worship leadership wear robes, the congregation sings traditional hymns, a children's sermon is offered, and music and preaching play a central role. Bible texts for each week are usually those shared by the larger Christian community from the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL). Communion or the Lord’s Supper is celebrated monthly and often by intinction (the dipping of bread into juice).
Will my family or me be called out?
We value your privacy, and to that end invite you to share your name and address with us by way of a visitor card, which you will find in the pew. There is a brief time of greeting before worship; however, none of these should draw widespread attention to you or your family. If you desire less interaction and more privacy, the balcony provides a bit more anonymity and a nice view.
What kind of Baptists are you?
We proudly affiliate with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship (CBF). As a CBF partner, we share in the support of missionaries around the globe and advocate for historic Baptist distinctive, like freedom and responsibility. Most Baptists in our area would describe us as "different." Our pastor is glad to speak with you about just what that means.
What do you offer youth and children?
Sunday mornings at First Baptist Church offer youth and children of all ages an opportunity for learning and fellowship through Bible Study beginning at 9:45. Several classes are simultaneously offered for adults. Each Sunday, our worship service includes a special time for children who wish to participate. Youth meet every Sunday at 5 PM for a time of learning and fellowship in the youth room. Wednesday’s during the school year (Elkin City School calendar) offers additional children’s activities including an age-graded choir and the opportunity to learn about service to our community and world. The church offers special events for both groups throughout the year.
